Social Movement

Hello millennials!

Do you wish to start a movement for social change?

If YES, check out the various types of category to get started:

SOCIAL

MOVEMENT 1:
TYPE:
SHOP

PROBLEM:
LACK OF ACCESS
TO FOOD

INSPIRATION:
SAW SCHOOL MEALS
MAKING A DENT IN
CHILD MALNUTRITION

MODEL:
CREATING PRODUCTS
THAT ENGAGE PEOPLE
IN THE FIGHT AGAINST
HUNGER

BENEFICIARIES:

ARTISAN COOPERATIVES
CHILDREN IN SCHOOL

IMPACT:
PRODUCT HAS A NUMBER
STAMP TO SIGNIFIES THE
AMOUNT OF MEALS
PROVIDED WITH THE
PURCHASE

MAKE PURCHASE A POSITIVE IMPACT: FEED products make an impact by investing in the health and education of children as well as the livelihood of local artisan communities. Just like 31 Bits, where every purchase of jewelry products are a channel to tell stories and empower women holistically to rise above poverty.

LONG-TERM CHANGE: FEED provide meals to children in school - but the effect goes beyond physiological needs. Research shows that when children are given school meals, attendance doubles and performances greatly improves. Just like 31 Bits which not only provide paychecks to women, but also trained them for the future through education, health care, and counselling program. When their lives changed, so do the lives of their children.

GET INSPIRED: If you are selling a product anyway, might as well leverage on the medium to spread awareness for social issues! :) Check out Ten Thousand Villages, a global fair trade movement that helps eradicate poverty through market-based solutions - by connecting individual entrepreneurs in developing countries with market opportunities in North America.

You too can be a social entrepreneur working for artisans, selling handcrafted products and educating grassroots.

YIRPA Alternative Voices Forum
Advoc8sg in conjunction with Malaysia's Project Liber8

EXTERNAL EVENTS:

BE INSPIRED: Do you support any cause? If yes, you could also create a platform to amass like-minded youths to engage one another on a problem. Generate opportunities through reflective sessions, forum conversations, interactive workshops, hands-on exercises for pre-tertiary and university students to discuss and network with civil society groups. Invite field experts from various organisations to provide their time and insights and give guidance and mentorship in one way or the other. Teach student leaders to explore and brainstorm ideas to tackle human trafficking, develop their own advocacy programmes and carry the movement into its next stages!

You too can be a youth advocate, one who support and influence other youths to take action against an activity.

SOCIAL
MOVEMENT 3:

INCLUSIVE SPACE

PROBLEM:
THE DEAF ARE THE MOST
INVISIBLE DISABILITY WHO
TRAILS IN THE SHADOWS

SILENT TEABAR

BENEFICIARIES:

EMPOWERMENT (GIVING): Silent TeaBar is an empowering space created for the non-hearing to lead the hearing. In silence, the non-hearing becomes the giving and the hearing receives benefits from this gift of silence that is -
self awareness, inner peace and contentment.

METHOD OF GIVING: The calming quality of drinking tea, the de-stressing nature of meditation, combined with moments of silence, one designed a ritual session that brings both hearing and non-hearing parties together. The deaf tea servers go to workplaces to guide executives through a tea-drinking session, in which they practice mindfulness and self-reflection - sans mobile phones and other such devices.

BE INSPIRED: Do you have any life-changing experience so far? If yes, you could share your healing process and benefit others alike! Check out Body Inc., a holistic wellness center which provides a one-stop solution for detox, weight management and skin rejuvenation. Jacelyn Tay, the founder also started the company based on her journey of nutritional healing towards good health.

Overcoming bad events or experiences in life can inspire yourself to help others with similar circumstances.

SOCIAL
MOVEMENT 4:
TYPE:
NATIONAL CAMPAIGN

PROBLEM:
HEALTH CONCERNS

INSPIRATION:
VISION TO BUILD
A NATION OF
HEALTHY PEOPLE

MODEL:
HEALTH INFORMATION
AND PROGRAMMES

BENEFICIARIES:
RESIDENTS OF SINGAPORE

IMPACT:
IMPROVED QUALITY AND
YEARS OF HEALTHY LIFE

REWARD THE BEHAVIOR: Social movement by government is a nation-wide initiative - which aims to influence a shift in lifestyle and behavior so that it becomes the public norm. To counter a sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity, Health Promotion Board (HPB) engaged the entire nation in a common physical activity on three different platforms - Rep with Steps, Steps for Good, and National Steps Challenge where participants are rewarded for taking more steps daily. To promote exercise and healthy weight, HPB also launched the Million Kg Challenge which award finalists for successfully losing at least 3kg.

BE INSPIRED: Do you have a popular incentives in mind? If yes, it can be used to to kick-start a movement too! Ultimately, any positive behavior is a lifelong process and the particular behavior has to have personal benefits in doing so. Check out Singapore Kindness Movement that encourage everyone to start, show and share kindness. Graciousness is a virtue itself and promises to encourage teamwork, productive friendships, and a positive mindset. The movement is initiated and run by volunteers / individuals motivated to create real change in society.

I'm starting with the man in the mirror. I'm asking him to change his ways. And no message could be any clearer.

SOCIAL
MOVEMENT 5:
TYPE:
CURATOR

PROBLEM:
LOSS OF FAMILY DISHES
WHEN OLDER GENERATION
PASSES ON

INSPIRATION:
MANY YOUNG TAKE
THEIR FAMILY DISHES
FOR GRANTED

MODEL:
STORIES
LESSONS
RECIPES

BENEFICIARIES:
YOUTH

IMPACT:
MORE YOUNG PRESERVING
FAMILY RECIPES AND
BECOMING HOME CHEFS

REDUCE BARRIERS TO ENTRY: To encourage youths to learn their family dishes and the value that comes with them, Homemade collected and curated a series of stories behind everyday family dishes - in the form of galleries, articles as well as videos to explore the memories tied to these flavors. To make it easier for youth to take the first step in whipping out their family dish, Handmade also anticipated the common excuses they have, by curating a syllables based on the best online tutorials to guide them from being a kitchen tourist to a theoretical master chef! And to show youths that most family dishes are not as hard as they think, Handmade even release a cookbook Homebound with recipes contributed by families!

BE INSPIRED: Do you have a stake in the tradition you wish to preserve? If you have, make sure others have too. No one will preserve a tradition if they lack love for or are not worried of loss - since rewards are non-monetary.

Preservation is similar to conservation. When we protect what we depend on, we're saving them from extinction.

Hope you have an idea on the movement you want to start off!

Good Luck! :)
